About Morgan

I have a very specific memory of the first time I felt in awe of nature and its beauty; on a trail ride with my family in the Pembina Valley when I was approximately 7 or 8 years old. We rode our horses to the top of the valley where there was this incredible view of forest filled pastures and at the bottom the Pembina River twisting this way and that as far as the eye could see in either direction. It was breath taking and I remember thinking, that I wish everyone could experience nature in this way and experience how it made me feel at that exact moment. As time passed my love for nature and the outdoors grew. A part of me has always known that my life’s purpose would be to share my love, respect and admiration for nature with those around me; with absolutely no idea as to how to make that happen.

You see I grew up in a small farming community in Southern Manitoba where life was simple but so was the economy. My future employment prospects consisted of farming, waitressing, being a cashier, pumping gas, nursing, mechanics or Manitoba Hydro employee. None of which inspired me to provided the opportunity to create in people that feeling of wonder and awe I felt so many years previous while horseback riding in the valley. So I did what so many small town kids before me with big dreams have done; moved to the big city to pursue farther education.

After graduating high school I enrolled in the University of Manitoba’s Bachelor of Environmental Science program which I graduated from in May of 2013. Within those four and a half years I had many amazing opportunities working on research and conservation projects for Piping Plovers, Burrowing Owls, and Peregrine Falcons. I’d learn how to band birds, protect nests from predators, even how to be a falconer! I’d trudged through the bush on a multi-year caribou survey, fly around northern Manitoba in a teeny tiny four seater plane counting moose and in helicopters tracking the polar bear migration along the Hudson Bay coast. Snow shoe across the Boreal Forest in search of bear and wolf dens. But I also discovered that life isn’t always simple and things don’t always turn out the way that you think they will just because you want them too. While I was busy building my resume and a promising career my personal life and mental health had taken a major downward spiral. For the first time in my life I was separated from nature, my pets and the quiet country life I was so used to and then an unexpected breakup with my high school sweet heart sent me over the deep end. Without knowing what to call it, how to put my feelings into words or even where to turn, to begin looking for help, for what I wasn’t even sure was fixable. I was depressed, in denial and stuck; and there I stayed for 2 years.

Eventually it was the quiet, persistent patience of a new friend/confidant (who would later become my husband) who convinced me to seek the help I needed to begin my journey on the path back to health and happiness. A combination of talk therapy, prescription medication and reconnecting to nature brought me back to balance and set my life on a whole new course. This experience has opened my eyes to new possibilities, new ways of thinking and living that I never could have even imagined before.
